Interface Design III
This is the third iteration of my synthesizer-without-enclosure installation which consists of ten exposed circuits with light resistors. The first iteration was in a white box gallery at Calarts where viewers were able to play with the circuits with flashlights; the second iteration was at Coaxial Arts where viewers were able to change the pitch of the instrument with their shadows, and this iteration, the viewer will change the synthesizer by viewing it as the circuits will be inside of a peepshow-like box. The idea is for this version to be a kind of cabinet of curiosities. These circuits will be in a black box with a curtain that viewers will have to peer inside to view and by doing so, they will change the sound.
Erin Demastes is a Los Angeles-based multimedia artist, composer, and performer whose research lies at the intersection of art and science. She uses repurposed technology and everyday objects to explore sonic phenomena related to acoustics, resonance, electricity, and magnetism. Her fixed media work usually consists of assembled sculptures made from hacked electronics and things that should probably be in the trash. Erin also specializes in improvised music, and her current work involves performing on synthesizers, laptops, toys, found objects, and homemade instruments and electronics.
