Conchi Sanford

Conchi Sanford’s work reflects her own cultural diversity and calls into question social constructs that pertain to identity. Her interest is in the psychological impact the experience has on the individual and how that manifests itself in the psyche. While Conchi’s concentration is on sculpture, she creates pieces in a variety of mediums, which allows for much freedom. Conchi Sanford holds a Master in Fine Arts from Claremont Graduate University (2011). She is an Adjunct Professor at Crafton Hills College and at Mt. San Jacinto College. In addition, she also curates 2 to 3 shows a year at different venues in the greater LA area.

Bailando

This piece is a series of 30 to 50 elongated plastic see-through tubes that are each approx 8 to 10 ft tall and hanging from the ceiling. The tubes are hung in such a way that they invite the viewer to walk through. As the viewer walks through, the tubes begin to shake making sound like the sound from a Nick Cave Soundsuit. The tubes begin to shake and the work begins to light up and change from one color to the next. Each tube will be outfitted with a sensor, vibrator and lighting system.

The work is inspired by diversity and reflects on how light and dance can bring generations and cultures together. Throughout the world, each culture has its own form of dance and celebration and continues to use it to teach young generations about history and life.
