eARThLB contributing artists responded to a prompt from east village caravanserai:
We are pummeled by constant bad news about our earth. Individual responses can seem inadequate. When the future feels uncertain, how do we move forward? What do artivists say in response to these times? We’d like to hear whatever you choose to say, write, paint, record, dance, photograph, or compose to/for/about the fragment of the planet known as Long Beach, CA. We’re asking for work that addresses, describes, converses with, interrogates, celebrates, howls, laughs, screams at, symbolizes or represents our land-sea-air-scape and anything in it.

east village caravanserai curates chamber theatre and other performances in small, accessible community spaces in the East Village/Downtown Long Beach area. Bringing together performing artists and audiences through shows that are socio-politically relevant to Long Beach’s communities.

Akari Komura
Akari Komura is a Japanese composer-vocalist whose works center around contemplative engagement with listening and soundmaking. Her interest in somatic practice and embodied consciousness is central to her approach. Her works have been presented at the Atlantic Music Festival, Composers Conference, Montreal Contemporary Music Lab, Nief-Norf, and soundSCAPE. She holds an M.M. in Composition from the University of Michigan and a B.A. in Vocal Arts from the University of California, Irvine. Her major teachers include Evan Chambers, Roshanne Etezady, and Stephen Rush. She is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Composition at the University of California San Diego.

Alexander McVickar
Born: Los Angeles, California: 1973
Bachelor of Arts Media: University of California San Diego
His work is based on interpreting and Micro/Macro Mapping of the Universe’s energies and the forms they sometimes inhabit. These are realized as “snapshots” of the subject matter frozen in time in his drawings, paintings, sculptures, and land art. He is a documentary and abstract filmmaker and photographer. His process involves accessing the stream of consciousness, and he utilizes found and available materials to create his work. Observation is vital to inspiration for his words realized as poetry, songs, and spontaneous outbursts of sonic vibration.

Bret Harte Elementary School Student Artists
With the guidance of Ms. Claire and Ms Dominique, student artists of Bret Harte Elementary School have a hands-on experience of the earth, as they garden. Through the efforts of Ground Education ( https://www.groundeducation.org/ ), Bret Harte Elementary has six garden beds full of a variety of plants; carrots, radishes, sugar snap peas, herbs, and more! There are two nature paths along each side growing native California flora. The garden is a place of wonderment and exploration for all students at Harte!

cindita uses assemblage to explore her thoughts and to process difficult, often deeply repressed emotions about the ever-changing world around her. Using found objects, magazine clippings, and textiles, she combines seemingly unrelated pieces to make something strange and new, yet familiar. Her distinctive style emanates her inner struggles with the complexities of the human condition and her expressions are brought to life with contrasting, harmonious colors, bold compositions, and intuitive inclinations.

Connie DK Lane
Connie DK Lane completed her art education at California State University, Long Beach where she focused on exploring sculptural installation with mixed media. Born of her emigration from Hong Kong to here, and evolving from her contemplation on belonging, memory, and being. Lane’s work is about the past and personal history, and how they relate to the present.

Da Aie Park
Da Aie Park was born in Seoul, Korea and graduated from College of Fine Arts, Seoul National University. She moved to Los Angeles and has been a studio artist at Angels Gate Cultural Center since 1997. Her minimalist paintings are concerned with the nature of color. She responds to the brilliance of selected hues and the gradual process of applying layers of pigment. Recently, she began exploring sculpture as a reaction to her upcoming project about LA river. To date, Park has participated in eleven solo exhibitions and numerous group shows in the united States, Asia and Europe.

Dani Lunn
Dani Lunn is a Los Angeles based intercultural and multidisciplinary artist whose current work explores the interrelationship between sound and movement. Holding a certification in Deep Listening®, her practice is grounded in dance, ritual theatre and music, including a BFA in Dance at CalArts and independent study in Bahia, Brazil. She is currently co-facilitating Rainbow Body Matrix in residence at the Electric Lodge in Venice, CA and grateful to be part of the Deep Listening community.

David Eddington
David Eddington was born in London. He studied at the Central School of Art in Holborn, London; after graduating with a MFA in Fine Art he lived variously in Southern India, Italy, Somerset and London. His practice as a visual artist has been consistent; as a frequent exhibitor with Gallery Siâu in Amsterdam, he has also had regular shows in Spain and England also many exhibitions in the US. He has work in museums in the UK and Italy. Eddington was a tenured professor at Plymouth University’s School of Art in Devon, then relocated to the USA in 2000. Initially based in New Orleans, he lectured at Loyola University and LSU Baton Rouge, also showing work at various galleries including NOLA’s Contemporary Art Center. Later, he came to live in California where he now lives in Venice with his family. Eddington continues to exhibit his work extensively, primarily large scale paintings in both acrylic and oils.

Carole Frances Lung (they/ them, San Francisco CA, B. 1966) is the biographer and archivist for their alter ego Frau Fiber; Professor and Curator of the Institute 4 Labor Generosity Workers & Uniforms Frau Fiber’s headquarters embedded in the Fashion Fiber and Materials at California State University Los Angeles; and the Executive Director of Antenna in New Orleans LA. Their work in collaboration with Frau Fiber activates a vocabulary of fashion and textile production and consumption, crafting of one of a kind garments, installations, performances, and social sculpture, paying homage to labor, textile and apparel manufacturing histories and contemporary production systems

Karena Massengill
Karena Massengill was born and raised in Ukiah, CA. She has travelled around the world and lived in Canada for 11 years before moving to S. CA. She has a full-time art practice in San Pedro with a 2500 sq foot studio and art gallery display area. Her education includes an MFA and BFA in sculpture, and a BEd. In Visual and Technology Arts. She has exhibited her artwork in the US, Canada, Russia, and South America.

Kay Erickson
Kay Erickson got her first camera at age 7 and went on to earn a BFA in Photography from the University of Minnesota. Kay’s focus is street photography, where she constantly finds odd and funny natural compositions to capture. Coming originally from Minnesota, where everything is covered in a blanket of snow for 6 months, she loves to walk around Long Beach all year round and capture all the warm weather images that are constantly exposed.

mirrored fatality remembers wholeness from dismembered flesh and mutates as cross pollinating perennial terratoids. mirrored fatality intertwines glitch rage webs with corroded resonance and regenerates forsaken spores across their current biome: ECOCIDE 3URTH. mirrored fatality is an underground interdependent Kapampangan and South Asian xenobinary experimental and healing noise queer punk farmer duo sharing their rituals + altars. mirrored fatality creates their “cocoon webs'' combining performance art, music, spoken word, film, photography, painting, drawing, upcycled garments, anti-imperialist education, and healing justice practice spaces to mobilize a warrior community responding to transnational calls-to-action for mutual aid, land sovereignty, and prison abolition.

Ricardo Tomasz
Ricardo Tomasz is an artist in audio-scapes, photography, painting, collage, video, performance art, Artificial Intelligence Art, and occasionally body hair. He is a creative genius and visionary, it says so on his middle school diploma. He was born and raised in Hungary, to a Hungarian mother, and a Spaniard father. They died when he was 16, but their passing allowed him to tour and study at some of the finest Art Universities in Europe. He came to America, thrusting himself into the art scene. He was in and out, in and out, and in and out of America over several years, until finally settling in Los Angeles as an artist, designer, and occasional human crosswalk sign. Sheriann Ki Sun Burnham
Sheriann Ki Sun Burnham is a visual artist and designer. She received a B.A. in Studio Art from California State University Long Beach in 1982. She explores handmade and computational systems in creating mixed media/digital painting, sculpture, and time-based media art, and is also a freelance designer working in graphics and creative production. Her fine art has been exhibited across Southern California and the U.S; and internationally in Germany, France, Spain, Portugal, New Zealand, China, and South Korea. In 2004 she received an Individual Artist Fellowship from the Long Beach Public Corporation for the Arts.
